This is a call to be vocal, political and spiritual. We are told Jesus came ‘proclaiming peace’; the Hebrew word is shalom – wholistic, inclusive harmony. This was both his message and his mission. It is to be ours as well.
Jesus ‘spoke truth to power’, challenging both the church and the state of his day. He also showed love to the powerless, demonstrating that they were the ones with the real strength and authority. How relevant is Jesus’ teaching today in the face of the ecological crisis, political challenge, the criminal justice system and widespread violence and war?
